Dear Colleagues –

Welcome to the first WFNS Newsletter of 2025!
The initial items address various topics: - “Why Neurosurgeons Should Do Peripheral Nerve Surgery” - “Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery (FIENS) Award Overview 2024” - “Neurosurgery in the Time of War” This report considers the situation in Ukraine – we invite those who have first-hand experience with neurosurgery in other current battle zones to contribute also.

Why Neurosurgeons Should Do Peripheral Nerve Surgery

Neurosurgeons are reluctant to embrace peripheral nerve surgery (PNS) and often dismiss it as a subspecialty for plastic, orthopedic or hand surgeons. In many countries, PNS is not even included in the neurosurgical curriculum. There are however many reasons for this fascinating subspecialty to be an integral part of neurosurgery - the first and most obvious one being that peripheral nerves are part of the nervous system!

In 2024, FIENS supported the disbursement of 11 awards to young neurosurgeons in the following countries: Benin, Cameroon, Uganda, DemocraEc Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Armenia, Uzbekistan.

Neursurgery in the Time of War

War is hell, and providing far-forward neurosurgical care is extremely challenging.

In December 2024, I (author DK) visited Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro, Ukraine – the frontline medical center 100 km from the front. I was the guest of Andrii Sirko, Academic Chair of the Neurosurgery Department. For three days, Dr Sirko kindly allowed me to shadow him.

The mission of the G4 Alliance is: Advocating for the neglected surgical patient.

Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons (NESON) Annual Conference

The 11th annual Conference of NESON was successfully held at Biratnagar and Itahari in Eastern Nepal on Nov 14-16, 2024. The theme of the conference was “Evolution of Neurosurgery with Technology”. The President of the Conference was Dr Yam Bahadur Roka. Dr Sudan Dhakal was the Scientific Chair and Dr Gopal Sedain was the Organizing Secretary.
