About the Training Center:

Paulo Niemeyer Soares Filho, MD, PhD, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Instituto Estadual do Cérebro Paulo Niemeyer (Rio, Brazil), Rio de Janeiro State Hospitals Health System network, with a referral population area of outnumbering 16 millions inhabitants, offers a 4 month paid international fellowship to senior residents, postgraduate fellows, or recently graduated neurosurgeons.

Instituto Estadual do Cérebro Paulo Niemeyer with our 33 staff members and 15 postgraduates at Pontifícia Universidade Católica(PUC) University, cover almost all neurosurgical fields (see below). Since the inauguration of the Institute on August 2013, we performed 2400 elective procedures; mainly brain tumors, aneurysms and epilepsy. In our Institute we don’t do trauma or spine cases.

A 1000 US$ grant will be provided for the stay, as donation from the Centro de Estudo e Pesquisa Paulo Niemeyer . During the above mentioned period, the fellows can be involved as observers in the clinical and surgical activities of the department, and also in the academic, teaching and research projects. After completion of the period, a local certificate and also a WFNS Certificate will be given. The process of selection is carried out by the Foundation of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (Prof. Armando Basso)

• Equipments and Facilities at the Instituto Estadual do Cérebro Paulo Niemeyer, as follows:

• PNSBI is a State reference center for Neurosurgery and Neurointensive care with 44 ICU beds, 5 O.R., 12 medical offices, and 2 video EEG units. A 12 story building with new 120 beds is under construction.
• Neurosurgical facilities include: 5 surgical microscopes (Pentero,Möller- Wedel), Image guided surgery,Intraoperative MRI, Intraoperative monitoring, Ultrasonic Aspiration, Cortical and Sub-cortical stimulation, Stereotactic Equipaments.
• Neuroradiological Department: 2 MRI (1.5 T), 32 Channel CT, Digital Angiography
• Gamma-Knife Perfexion
• Auditorium with capacity for 120 persons with video-conferencing facilities, a high-end conference room for 45 persons and other for 15 persons.

Neurosurgical Department Activities

• Daily clinical rounds from 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM.
• Neurovascular meeting every Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 8:30AM
• Neuroendocrine and Pituitary Tumor meeting every Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 9:00AM
• Pediatric Neurosurgery meeting every Thursday from 7:30 AM to 8:00AM
• Neurooncology and Skull Base meeting every Thursday from 8:00 AM to 9:30AM
• Epilepsy Surgery meeting every Friday from 8:00 AM to 9:30AM
• Journal Club every Friday from 8:00 to 8:30 AM
• Clinical Research meetings twice a month
