WFNS Announcement Regarding the World Health Organization

We are pleased to announce that the 152nd session of the Executive Board (EB) of the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to maintain the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies as a non-State actor in official relations with WHO during this past meeting held in Geneva 30 January – 7 February 2023. Official relations with WHO is a triennial cycle for which a plan of collaboration is submitted and approved to maintain this designation for the period of 2023-2025. These agreed upon activities are designed to contribute to the outcome targets in WHO’s General Program of Work.

Maintaining the designation as a non-State actor in official working relations with WHO allows up to 10 delegates from WFNS to attend the biannual EB sessions (January and June each year) and the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May, make statements for or against agenda items, and attend official side events. However, it is a non-voting position. This is an excellent opportunity to have the voice of global neurosurgery heard in this major international governing body. It is a rather difficult to achieve privilege to have this designation.

For the past 8 years, WFNS has been represented by a full complement of delegates at each
WHA.
