WFNS Education Survey Results & Courses 2024

Chair, WFNS Education & Training Committee

Recently, the WFNS Education & Training Committee conducted a survey on the education needs of neurosurgeons worldwide. There were 438 respondents. 16% of the respondents were female, and 43% were below 40 years old. The regions of the respondents were South America (42.4%), Asia (20.3%), Europe (16.6%), the Middle East (12.3%), North America (4.3%), and Africa (3.9%).

Global neurosurgery has become an increasingly important imperative in the future of the field of neurosurgery and neurosurgery is a leader in the area of global health. The 2015 Lancet Report on essential surgery worldwide shows a huge deficit in low- and middle-income countries. Access to essential surgical care, including neurosurgical is absent for 5.5 billion people in the world. It is imperative that this must be solved.

He is widely regarded as the Father of Modern Neurosurgery due to the immense work he did in studying neurosurgical conditions and refining surgical techniques for approaching brain tumours as well as his influence in making neurosurgery an autonomous surgical discipline. Contribute to Neurosurgery with an Opinion or Op-Ed

In January of this year, the journal Nature published a piece entitled, “Opinion Writing is a Win-Win: Sharing your perspective and ideas can benefit general readers and your career”.1 During the April 15 webinar of the WFNS Research Committee, Anil Nanda made the point that young neurosurgeons – especially those in LMICs with limited opportunities for traditional research publications – should write about other topics of interest to fellow neurosurgeons. As an example, he suggested writing a history of neurosurgery in their home country (assuming this has not been published previously).

The Continental Association of African Neurosurgical Societies (CAANS) has selected Kinshasa and Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Republic of Congo (RC) respectively, as host for the 5th CAANS Congress 24th and 25th November (Pre-Congress Workshop on Vascular and Spine) and 26th to 28th November at Fleuve Congo Hotel and Tours Jumelles de Brazzaville. This biannual international congress, previously held in Algiers (Algeria), Cape Town (South Africa), Abuja (Nigeria) and most recently Nairobi (Kenya), is a significant continental health sector event that attracts Neurosurgeons from the entire globe. In line with prior meetings, we expect 350 delegates from all the continents and strong participation of other sister international organizations.
