Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Division of Neurosurgery

WFNS Post-Graduate Training Center, Naples, Italy

Director: Prof. Paolo Cappabianca

About the Training Center:

The Division of Neurosurgery of the University of Naples Federico II, under the leadership of Prof. Paolo Cappabianca, has a long-standing tradition as a reference center in Italy in the treatment of patients with central nervous system diseases, by virtue of a solid clinical and scientific activity, supplemented by the addition of technological innovations. Since 2005, an operating room has been fully wired, which offers the possibility of handling all the equipment even by means of a single panel, controlled directly by the surgeon from the surgical field. In addition, a "streaming" communication system allows the interaction with remote locations. The endoscopic endonasal surgery of the pituitary region and skull base, introduced in Naples and for the first time in Europe in 1997, is the clinical field that has especially distinguished itself. Moreover, the collaboration with endocrinologists, pathologists and neuroradiologists allowed the birth of a virtuous circle in order to create a multidisciplinary team able to manage patients with pituitary disorders in an all-round way. This situation represents a fertile ground for the development of multiple research topics – above all molecular and translational analysis of membrane receptors and intracellular transduction pathways in the development of pituitary tumors and pharmacological efficacy studies – whose publication has been found to be of very high impact in the scientific community.
Nowadays, the Division is a pole of national and international attraction, recruiting patients from many regions of Italy and abroad, and specialists from all over the world, to learn and improve this innovative clinical and surgical treatment methods. The service is based at the AOU FEDERICO II Hospital and offers an infrastructure that includes Outpatients, Theatres and Radiology.
