About the Training Center (NNI):

National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) is the designated national center for neurosciences in Singapore. It is a tertiary level integrated neuroscience center comprising of neurosurgery, neurology, and neuroradiology with dedicated neurosurgical intensive care units and operating rooms. It houses the largest neurosurgery unit in Singapore and has an established reputation built on:

  • Highly developed sub-specialty care utilizing the most advanced technology such as advanced neuroimaging, intraoperative MRI and Novalis Radiosurgery (SGH Campus).
  • High clinical volume with excellent outcomes.
  • An Academic Neuroscience Programme with Duke-NUS Medical School.

Fellowship details:

NNI is pleased to offer two fellowships per annum to young neurosurgeons who are driven, and looking to introduce newly-acquired neurosurgical techniques to their employing organization. Details of the fellowship are as follows:

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Stipend: SGD$ 2,600/mth. Travelling expenses are not covered.
  • Accommodation: Fellow will have to find their own housing for the period of their attachment.

  • Fellow will be required to be on the resident’s on-call roster;
  • Assist in surgeries and may be given opportunities to perform selected surgeries under supervision;
  • Managing and caring for patients under supervision;
  • Attend surgeries, outpatient clinics, departmental meetings and conferences;
  • Active participation in on-going research activities is strongly encouraged. Aim to complete 1 research project.

The successful fellow will be exposed to the full range of neurosurgical sub-specialties including neuro-oncology, neurovascular surgery, spine surgery, skull base surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, traumatic brain injury and neurocritical care.

*NNI operates a Chief Resident System and residents are awarded priority in the operating theatre.

Fellowship intake:

Fellows are accepted into the programme twice a year. The intake period for this fellowship is as shown below:

Fellowship Criteria:

  • Young neurosurgeon residing in a developing country
  • Recently completed residency training program or equivalent
  • Basic medical degree from an accredited medical university or medical school (SMC Requirement)
  • Passed the relevant national licensing examination in the country of conferment of basic degree (where applicable)
  • Fulfill English requirements of SMC if the medium of instruction for the basic medical qualification is not in English
  • Evidence of at least 12 months housemanship / internship with a certificate of satisfactory completion of housemanship or equivalent
  • Have a minimum of 3 years working experience as a medical officer or equivalent
  • Been registered as a medical practitioner in the country where he is currently practising
  • Been certified to be of good standing by the Medical Council or the relevant national authority
