Consensus Meetings and Recommendations
The spine committee has started the preparation of evidence-based recommendations for some common spinal disorders. To accomplish this task, a series of consensus meetings were designed. Since 2018, we did five consensus meeting: “Cervical spondylotic myelopathy," “Lumbar Spinal Stenosis," “Cervical Spine Trauma and Spinal Cord Injury," “Thoracolumbar Trauma," “Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures." The last meeting on osteoporotic vertebral fractures was online on January 11 2021. Our first recommendation series on “Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy” are published in the Neurospine Journal in 2019: https://www.e-neurospine.org/ an open-access journal. WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations on “Lumbar Spinal Stenosis” are published in World Neurosurgery: X in 2020: https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/world-neurosurgery- x/vol/7/suppl/C It is open access containing six papers: (1) Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: Introduction to the WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations. (2) Natural Course and Diagnosis of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations. (3) Conservative Treatment and Percutaneous Pain Relief Techniques in Patients with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. (4) Decompressive Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. (5)Fusion Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. (6) Mobility-Preserving Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations on “Cervical Spine Trauma” and “Spinal Cord Injury” have very recently published in the Neurospine Journal in December 2020: https://www.e-neurospine.org It is open access including 9 papers (1) Cervical Spine Trauma and Spinal Cord Injury Recommendations of WFNS Spine Committee. (2) Early Management of Cervical Spine Trauma: WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations. (3) Upper Cervical Spine Trauma. (4) Subaxial Cervical Trauma. (5) Early Management of Spinal Cord Injury. (6) Pharmacologic and Regenerative Cell Therapy for Spinal Cord Injury. (7) Pediatric Cervical Spine Injuries and SCIWORA. (8) Outcomes of Spinal Cord Injury. (9) Rehabilitation of Spinal Cord Injury. All recommendations on “Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy," “Lumbar Spinal Stenosis," "Cervical Spine Trauma” and “Spinal Cord Injury” can also be reached from the web site of the WFNS Spine Committee http://wfns-spine.org/recommendations
Future Plans
Our postponed meeting in Milan is planned for October 2021. We are working on completing our recommendations on “Thoracolumbar Trauma” and “Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures." We plan to prepare consensus meeting on “Basilar invagination and Chiari malformation”. A book on “Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy and OPLL" is about to be published by Thieme Publishers. This book will be dealing with all aspects of the cervical spondylotic myelopathy and OPLL with 28 chapters. The last proofs are being revised.
