One of the most notable achievements of Franco during his presidency is how he shepherded the rapid ascent of the field of Global Neurosurgery. Recognizing the importance of the Global Surgery movement and the important role neurosurgeons had in meeting the unmet surgical needs in the developing world, Franco was an early adopter of Global Neurosurgery. His leadership resulted in the global neurosurgical workforce map being part of the WFNS website, a first of any surgical subspecialties and the creation of the Global Neurosurgery Committee. The Committee is currently on tract to hitting most of the targets of the Global Neurosurgery Action Plan – an ambitious coordination plan designed to address the massive disparities in neurosurgical care in the world through a holistic and systematic way. Global Neurosurgery has a long way to go but due to the vision and leadership of Franco Servadei, we are off to an excellent start.
